OPeNDAP allows one to give a application a url and have it directly download data. To read this data into matlab use 
loaddap('http://181.199.253.14/SOURCES/.Features/.Hydrological/.Lakes/.MajorLakes/sqmi/1+index/.depth/gid+exch/dods')
